Preface

Frugality is making a comeback, but some people will tell you that it never left town. Those are the people you are about to hear from. Frugality is both timeless and timely, and everyone can use it to their advantage. There are millions of people who can’t seem to get a grip on their money and feel that success is defined by what they own, without considering what they owe. This book will help keep you from being one of them. It will also help you if you already are one.

America is maxed out financially. This is not new news. We buy stuff we don’t need. We willingly fall for the powerful marketing gimmicks out there that tell us we aren’t cool, great parents, good looking, or smart unless we buy whatever marketers happen to be pitching. Or, that there is some quick path to endless wealth. There isn’t.

We are the world’s largest debtor nation. That’s not good. We often buy things that make no sense for us to buy based on our current finances. At the end of the day, we are responsible for our own spending habits. No excuses. And now many people are paying the price for being irresponsible. Some may be able to fool the Joneses for a while, but all they are really doing is fooling themselves. This book is about how not to be one of them.

There is an oasis that many have found to protect themselves from getting into financial messes. It’s called frugality. Frugality gets a bad rap from those who think they are above practicing it. Some think being frugal means being cheap. It doesn’t, as you will see in the pages ahead, but that’s the sound bite that most people who can’t control themselves financially have come up with to write off frugality as a possible answer to their problems.

Being frugal is smarter than being cheap.

There are a core group of people who have gone against the grain by not accepting over-spending as the great American pass-time. They are the kind of people you would least expect to be concerned about money. They are millionaires. Correction: They are frugal millionaires. They are healthy, wealthy and wise. They are painlessly growing their net worth with their frugal ways. They are about to tell you how they think differently about money compared to most other people. You can freely use their ideas to help keep more of what you earn, and grow it.
